The most sympathized part was to get out of the routine. Living in KMLA in a strict routine, makes me deviate. In this short story, the narrator and his friend Mahony make a deviation and wander around Dublin. And then they see many people and places and meet a man. I think this man has bad thoughts. He is so conservative. Maybe it is because of the Irish religion. Catholic is one of the strict and conservative religions that I know, so this man may be influenced by the religion.
I liked this quote from the story. "But real adventures, I reflected, do not happen to people who remain home: they must be sought abroad." I think this is like a hint of this full story. Because of this thought, the narrator could break away and see the society, meet a man that was an encounter. From this encounter, the narrator could feel better about his friend.
I think both <An Encounter> and <Araby> are similar as a growth story of teenager boys. The narrators feel the outside world in illusion, but when they see the substance, they know that their thought was just an imagination. (196 words)
Can I write a blog like this when I read the stories that we don't do in class? I want somewhere to write and share my thougts.
답글삭제You can, but you only if you have done the class material first, as I see The Sisters is missing. We will definitely cover this story down the road after midterms. The man is conservative on the surface, but also deviant in his strangeness and potential perversions. It is very inapropriate for him to engage like this with the two boys. As readers, perhaps (sadly) we can all recall strange incidents with strange adults that leave us feeling uncomfortable.
